Open DataOpen transit data is up-to-date schedule, route and real-time GPS location data that is freely available and accessible for use by the public. With the advent of technologies such as Google Maps, mobile phone applications and vehicle tracking, it is possible to provide transit riders with up-to-date schedules as well as real-time bus and streetcar departure information from virtually anywhere.

In 2012 and 2013, Ride New Orleans worked with the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority and Jefferson Transit to open both agencies’ transit data.  We convened local software developers along with the transit agencies’ staff  and provided technical guidance and even a challenge grant to support our local transit agencies’ to open their data.  Today, both the RTA and JET share their data with independent software developers and our local tech community has stepped up to create transit apps and other tools for riders.  Here are the apps that are available for New Orleans transit riders:

Nola Transit

  • What it does: Provides RTA schedules, real time bus locations, a system map, nearby stops, and step-by-step directions.
  • Devices: iPhone and iPod touch.
  • Cost: $1.99


  • What it does: Combines transit schedules, service alerts, and delays with updates from users.
  • Devices: iPhone
  • Cost: Free

Transit Hub

  • What it does: Allows you to select your transit stop and set a reminder for upcoming buses and streetcars.
  • Devices: iPhone and Android
  • Cost: Free


  • What it does: Provides real time vehicle location & speed, updated every 30 sec.
  • Devices: iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Works best on iPhone 5 or later.
  • Cost: Free
