TRANSIT LITERACY

About the Program
Many children and youth in New Orleans face transportation barriers that limit access to education, jobs, internships, and other important opportunities. Nearly one in five households in the city does not have access to a car, making public transit an essential resource for many families, especially in underserved communities.
Although nearly 60% of Orleans Parish residents ages 0–29 live within two blocks of a transit stop, many young people do not regularly use public transportation because they lack familiarity with the system and the skills needed to navigate it confidently and safely.
RIDE New Orleans addresses this gap through transit literacy training that teaches youth how to independently and effectively use public transportation. The program helps connect young people to school, work, healthcare, and community opportunities while promoting safer, more equitable mobility throughout the region.
